Uses and Functions of Mechanical Seals, Pneumatic Seals How Pneumatic Seals / Inflatable Seals Work

Pneumatic seals or inflatable seals work by introduction of an inflation pressure into the cavity of the inflatable seal. This inflation pressure causes the displacement of the seal effecting a positive seal between the seal and the surface to be sealed. Once the seal inflation pressure is removed the seal returns to its uninflated position (memory).

Regulated air is the commonly utilized inflation medium while in some applications pneumatic (gas) or hydraulic (liquid) methods are suitable. Inflatable seals offer versatile configurations in three different planes: radially in, radially out, and axially.

Strips can be in closed ends, mitered ends, and continuous loops. Mechanical Research & Design can produce pneumatic seals / inflatable seals from many elastomers including Butadiene Styrene (SBR), Chloroprene (Neoprene), Ethylene propylene (EPDM) and Fluorinated Hydrocarbon (Viton®). Viton(R) is a registered trademark of DuPont Dow Elastomers

    Mechanical Seals

"Sealfast" Mechanical Seals are made from the same extruded material as the inflatable seals are. This design allows the seal to be held by clamping on what we call the seal foot. The inside air cavity gives the mechanical seal room for compression therefore allowing some misalignment of the compression surface. The mechanical seals can be made in straight lengths, curved, continuous loops, or mitered corners. The "Sealfast" Mechanical Seal is manufactured to fit your application and is designed for long term usage where quality and durability are a must.
